Dr David James, senior lecturer in sports engineering at Sheffield Hallam University and the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Public Engagement Fellow will explore the impact of technology in Paralympic sport and debate how we ensure that the values of sport are not corrupted by the enhancement techniques pioneered by the sports scientist and engineer.

28th Nov 2011 -The Peter Harrison Centre is delighted to announce the visit of Professor Kathleen A. Martin Ginis who will be talking about "Innovations in the Study and Promotion of Physical Activity Among People with Spinal Cord Injury" at Loughborough University. The talk will be held at 1pm in the Clyde Williams Building (room HE 0.26).

11th Nov 2011 - Sporting prosthetics conference, Glasgow. This event will appeal to all professionals in allied healthcare and rehabilitation, those involved in sports & rehabilitation, as well as academics and prosthetic users alike. With the Olympic Games in London in 2012 and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, we aim to attract leading organisers and stakeholders of these events to the conference. It is hoped more than 200 delegates will participate in this event. 08th Sep - 09th Sep 2011 The German National Paralympic Committee (Deutscher Behindertensportverband) celebrated its 60th anniversary by hosting an international scientific symposium, as well as other receptions and meetings in Berlin. The scientific symposium that took place on 8th September was the organised by Dr Thomas Abel of the Deutsche Sporthoschule Köln (German Sport University, Cologne). He extended invitations to both national and international workers in the area of Paralympic and/or disability sport, the symposium covered the broad themes of Talent Identification and Development, Para-swimming, Para-athletics and Para-cycling.

31st Aug - 2nd Sep 2011 - Dr Barry Mason presented ‘The ergonomics of wheelchair configuration for optimal sports performance’ at the symposium on ‘Wheeled mobility’ at the Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology 2011 Conference held in Maastricht, Netherlands. Invited symposium.

5-6th May 2011 - Dr Brett Smith presented 'Spinal cord injury, quality of life and experiences of being in an isolation ward as a result of pressure sores' at the 4th European Spinal Psychologists Association Conference in Barcelona, Spain.

17 February 2011 - Dr David Howe took part in a panel discussion on 'Sport, Ethics and Dis/abilities: Medical model, social model, or a third way?', at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences at the Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven. Dr Howe has been invited to attend the panel and joined the discussions alongside other leading professors from the UK, Denmark and Norway. Workshop jointly hosted by the PHC and the Home Country Sports Institutes
‘The journey from rehabilitation to wheelchair sporting excellence: Considerations for the support practitioner’.
Other Comments: This workshop was supported by the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport and the Home Country Sports Institutes. It was endorsed by the British Paralympic Association and LOCOG as a relevant professional development opportunity for practitioners wishing to become involved in Paralympic sport.
Overview:
This is the first in a series of workshops that are aimed at broadening the understanding of Paralympic disability groups, and will focus on Spinal Cord Injury. Topics will include the physiological consequences of spinal cord injury, respiratory function, nutritional issues, body composition, thermoregulation and strength and conditioning.
This workshop will be of interest to students, athletes, coaches, lecturers, science and medicine practitioners and anyone with an interest in the physiological responses to upper-body exercise and/or Paralympic sport.
Confirmed speakers include Dr Vicky Goosey-Tolfrey (Loughborough University), Dr Mike Price (Coventry University), Chris West (Brunel University), Laura Sutton (Teesside University) and Jeanette Crosland (Freelance Sports Dietitian).
