Thursday 27 May 2010, Workshop jointly hosted by the PHC and the Home Country Sports Institutes

 

‘The journey from rehabilitation to wheelchair sporting excellence: Considerations for the support practitioner’.

Other Comments: This workshop is supported by the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport and the Home Country Sports Institutes. It is endorsed by the British Paralympic Association and LOCOG as a relevant professional development opportunity for practitioners wishing to become involved in Paralympic sport.

Overview:
This is the first in a series of workshops that are aimed at broadening the understanding of Paralympic disability groups, and will focus on Spinal Cord Injury. Topics will include the physiological consequences of spinal cord injury, respiratory function, nutritional issues, body composition, thermoregulation and strength and conditioning.

This workshop will be of interest to students, athletes, coaches, lecturers, science and medicine practitioners and anyone with an interest in the physiological responses to upper-body exercise and/or Paralympic sport.

Confirmed speakers include Dr Vicky Goosey-Tolfrey (Loughborough University), Dr Mike Price (Coventry University), Chris West (Brunel University), Laura Sutton (Teesside University) and Jeanette Crosland (Freelance Sports Dietitian).

25 January - 6 February 2010, Dr David Howe will be visiting The Norwegian University of Sport and Physical Education.

Dr. David Howe visited The Norwegian University of Sport and Physical Education between the 25th of January and the 6th of February as a visiting Professor. He was hosted by Prof. Øyvind Standal with whom David discussed the potential for collaborative research projects and potential links with the PHC.

 

On the 10th December 2009, Dr Vicky Tolfrey & Dr Lettie Bishop Presented their Research at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Dr Vicky Tolfrey and Dr Lettie Bishop were invited by Lone Rose the Clinical Specialist in Physiotherapy, at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, to present their research to those with a spinal cord injury and to the researchers and clinicians from the spinal unit. The aim was to give people an opportunity to share and get feed-back about projects in all stages of research - from earliest idea/concept to completion. The presentation took place on Thursday 10th December 2009.

 

On the 26th November 2009, Dr David Howe presented at the EUSAPA meeting held in Riga, Latvia

Dr David Howe was invited to present at the full partner meeting of the European Standards in Adapted Physical Activities (EUSAPA). The meeting focused on 'The role of the adapted sport in general education system, sport, recreation and rehabilitation'.

Dr Howe who will be representing the PHC, presented on 'APA a Vision from the 'Inside. The meeting was held on the 26th November 2009 at Riga in Latvia. To see the full event programme please click here EUSAPA Programme.

 

On the 26 October 2009, Dr Vicky Tolfrey gave a lecture at the University of Alberta, Canada

The Peter Harrison Centre is please to announce that Dr Vicky Tolfrey gave a lecture on 'Applied research to support the Paralympic wheelchair athlete preparing for Beijing' at the University of Alberta, Canada. The presentation was part of the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine's Distinguished Speakers Series and was held on Thursday 22 October 2009.

Vicky was pleased to have met Prof Martin Ferguson-Pell, the Dean of the Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty at the University of Alberta, and Louise and John Miller from the Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Centre (SCITS) . Vicky was also pleased to have met Dr. Vivian Mushahwar Associate Professor from the Dept. of Cell Biology and Centre for Neuroscience; Dr. Mike Mahon, Dean of the Physical Education and Recreation Faculty, and Dr. Donna Goodwin, Executive Director of the The Steadward Centre.

Vicky was also given a tour of the Tour of The Steadward Centre and the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and also met Dr. Mike Mahon, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation; Dr. Donna Goodwin, Executive Director of The Steadward Centre; Marcy Albers Program Coordinator of the Spinal Cord Injury Unit (SCI); and was also given a tour of the physiotherapy gym by Josh Bashow.

23-27 June 2009, 17th International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity (ISAPA) 2009

As part of the 17th International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity (ISAPA) 2009 Dr. David Howe has been invited to lead a symposium on 'Anthropology and Sociology in Adaptive Physical Activity'. He and leading scholars in the field will discuss the importance of social science research surrounding disability issues.

Barry Mason will also be contributing to a symposium on 'Ergonomics in rehabilitation: wheeled mobility & sports', which is lead by Professor Lucas van der Woude. Barry's contribution will be on 'The Influence of Glove Type on Mobility Performance for Wheelchair Rugby Players'. The abstract can be accessed from this link.

7-9th April 2009, The 4th International State-of-the-Art Congress on "Rehabilitation: Mobility, Exercise & Sports"

The 4th International State-of-the-Art Congress is organised by MOVE a research institute of the Vrije University in Amsterdam which aims to understand human movement by conducting excellent scientific research.

The theme of the 4th congress underlines the development taking place in MOVE's research since 1991 and from a strongly manual wheelchair-oriented focus rather than towards the much broader perspective of mobility restoration, active lifestyle, exercise, training and sports in the context of rehabilitation practice today.

4-5th March 2009, BPA 7th Annual Sports Science, Medicine & Coaching Conference supported by the PHC

Professor Thomas Janssen was the invited speaker at this year's British Paralympic Association's (BPA) 7th Annual Sports Science, Sports Medicine & Coaching Conference. The event was supported by the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport and was held at Burleigh Court in Loughborough on the 4-5th March 2009.

The PHC and BPA invited Professor Janssen to present on 'quantifying training'. The theme of the 2009 conference was on ‘Beijing to London: Lessons Learnt and Looking Forwards’.

 

25th February 2009, GB Paralympic Reception at Buckingham Palace

Following the success of the GB Team's performance at the Paralympic Games, Dr Vicky Tolfrey, John Lenton and Barry Mason have been invited to Buckingham Palace with the GB team.

20th February 2009, PHC Research Assistant, John Lenton Attended "The London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games: Regional Implications & Strategies" Conference

John Lenton attended "the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games: Regional Implications and Strategies" hosted by Canterbury Christ Church University's Centre for Sport, Physical Education and Activity Research (SPEAR). The Conference was held on Friday 20th February 2009 at the University's Salomons Centre (www.salomonsconferences.org.uk) near Tunbridge Wells in Kent.

 

7th February 2009, Dr David Howe Delivered Macintosh Lecture at Queens University, Canada

On the 7th February 2009, Dr David Howe delivered the Macintosh Lecture 2009 at Queens University in Kingston, Canada. His talk was titled:

'Social Justice and Paralympic Sport: towards happy marriage or difficult separation?'

The Donald Macintosh Memorial Visiting Scholar Fund was set up by Queen's University to bring prominent scholars in the field of sociology of sport or sport policy to provide a keynote lecture at this one day event. 25-28th January 2009, Dr David Howe Attended EUSAPA Network Meeting in Olomouc, Czech Republic on behalf of the PHC

On the 25-28th January 2009, Dr David Howe attended the EUSAPA Network meeting in Olomouc in the Czech Republic on behalf of the Centre. Dr Vicky Tolfrey was invited last year to contribute to this exciting project and this is the first meeting, where David will discuss the project and expected deliver from the Centre staff.

EUSAPA is the European Standards in Applied Physical Activity. To find out further information about this project please see the Palaky Olomouc University's website which has been translated from Czech. More information will follow when David returns.

 

19-23 January 2009, PHC Invites Dr Sean Tweedy from the University of Queensland to the Centre

Dr Sean Tweedy's visit to the Centre proved to be a great success. He spent several days with PHC members from the Sport Science and Sport Culture and Policy research strands and also spent time with associated colleagues from the British Paralympics Association and the English Institute of Sport. Dr Tweedy delivered a presentation to Loughborough University's Physiology Research Group on 'Evidence-based Classification in Paralympic Sport - Challenges and Research Opportunities'.

 

4-5th November 2008, External Visitor Dr Lucas van der Woude visited PHC

Dr van der Woude from the Free University (Vrije Universiteit) in Amsterdam visited the Centre to work with Dr Vicky Tolfrey, PHC Associate John Lenton and PhD student Barry Mason. Barry’s position is funded by a joint agreement between the British Paralympic Association and UK Sport, as part of the UK Sport Graduate Innovation Programme (GIP) of which Dr van der Woude is an advisor.

On Wednesday 5th November, Dr van der Woude presented a topical area of his research to Loughborough University's School of Sport and Exercise Sciences (SSES) Physiology Research group. A timetable programme of the SSES's physiology research can be obtained from Dr Richard Ferguson.
